Fishers Youth Assistance Program has several opportunities for community members to volunteer for the organization.
Following are our major programs that seek assistance from volunteers:
Holiday Helpers
The holiday season should be a time of joy, happiness, and celebration. However, for families that are struggling with health issues, finances, or other stresses, this time of year can feel overwhelming. We are looking to partner with those in our community who would be willing to “adopt” a child or family in need in order to make their holiday a little happier this year. You will receive a needs & wishes list from the children you are helping.
Volunteer Tutors
One of the important supports we offer families we work with is tutoring. We focus on narrowing academic gaps in math and reading for students in grades K-12. This 1:1 tutoring model is designed to have student and volunteer to meet once a week for a 45-60 minute session. The day/time/location are coordinated between the FYAP Tutoring Coordinator, Volunteer Tutor, and Parent.
S.T.A.R. Time
Student/Teacher Afterschool Review Time is is an after school tutoring program that supports small group tutoring sessions lead by school based staff (teachers/instructional assistants). Volunteers will help with ensuring students arrive in a timely manner, distribute snacks, take attendance, spend time with students and ensure students meet their families for pickup at the end of the tutoring session. S.T.A.R. Time occurs twice a week for 60 minute sessions.
Paws to Read
The Paws to Read program gives students the opportunity to read with a trained dog and their handler. This literacy program focuses on helping students gain confidence, improve social skills, and develop a love of reading. Volunteers will help escorting students to and from their classrooms.
