Our Story: The Evolution of Fishers Youth Assistance

Fishers Youth Assistance has evolved alongside the community we serve, sharpening our focus so local families can receive personalized support when they need it most.

Founded in 2009

Fishers Youth Assistance was established as a vital local branch of the broader Hamilton County Youth Assistance Program. Our foundational mission was to help local youth and families overcome life’s obstacles and find pathways to success. Over the years, as the Fishers community grew, so did the complexity of the challenges facing our neighbors.

A Focused Step Forward

To better address these evolving community needs, our organizational landscape recently underwent a major transition. Following a temporary merger with the Fishers Youth Initiative (FYI), both boards recognized that the most effective way to serve the Fishers community was to strategically separate into two independent, highly specialized organizations.

This transition was not a departure from our shared goals, but a sharpening of our focus. By operating as separate 501(c)(3) nonprofits, each team can dedicate 100% of its resources and expertise to distinct, critical areas of support.

Today, we complement each other’s work and coordinate closely to ensure that no local family falls through the cracks.

Understanding the Difference: FYI vs. FYA

Fishers Youth Assistance

FYA focuses on individualized, concierge-style family advocacy and resource navigation.

We walk alongside families experiencing complex crises, meet one-on-one to understand their specific barriers, and connect them with targeted resources such as:

  • Academic tutoring
  • Mental health counseling
  • Emergency financial assistance
  • Community resource connections
  • Long-term family support

Our goal is to provide continuous support until families regain lasting independence.

Fishers Youth Initiative

FYI focuses primarily on building foundation-level programs for HSE students.

Their work centers on addressing youth food insecurity and providing structured school-based mentoring through programs such as:

  • Summer meals programs
  • Weekend backpacks
  • School-day snack attacks
  • One-on-one school-based mentoring

A Collaborative Future

We believe that a stronger Fishers requires an interconnected, collaborative network. FYI remains an incredibly valued partner in our ecosystem, alongside local schools, churches, businesses, and other community nonprofits.

As separate entities, we both rely on independent donations to fund our respective services. When you invest in Fishers Youth Assistance, you are directly funding the personalized, one-on-one advocacy and case management that guides local families from crisis back to stability.
